My name is Amanda Salvia, and I am a senior Creative Writing major at Slippery Rock University. I began my college career in Journalism; I’ve always wanted to tell stories. Although my interests have led me away from reporting, that desire remains; now, it’s brought me to the newsroom at The Rocket. In my time at Slippery Rock, I’ve worn many hats. I am the managing editor of SLAB Literary Magazine, a nationally-accredited mag that publishes fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry from professional writers around the globe. I am the Public Relations Chairperson of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, an organization that allows me to marry some of my passions—gender equality, communication and great GIF usage. I am also the secretary of Sigma Tau Delta National English Honors Society (and the person behind their social media presence). At The Rocket, I apply my keen eye for details and my enthusiasm for the English language to fine-tune, fact-check and ascertain that grammar and syntax are sound, and that nary an Oxford comma slips into the paper. I’ve helped grow its social media presence as it transitions to a web-based paper, and with the other members of the staff, have continued to develop ways to increase readership on our website. Most importantly, my time at The Rocket is spent creating a student-run paper that delivers news and information to the people it serves—and correcting misused semicolons. I do that a lot too.
