This past weekend, Musical Theater Society (MTS) performed their Seven Deadly Sins Cabaret showcasing songs from musicals like “Dear Evan Hansen”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Wonka”, and “Little Shop of Horrors”.
MTS members who played a significant role in the production shared their favorite numbers, giving their own perspectives and insights to the show, and what might be next to come.
Many who participated in the show have vastly different opinions on their favorite number, including: “Good For You,” “Feed Me,” “Dust and Ashes” and “And Eve Was Weak”.
President and Stage Manager, Vickie Herrick, is a senior art therapy major with a passion for theater. When asked her favorite number from the show she responded, “’Epiphany!’ Andy killed it and I absolutely love anything Josh Groban.”
Piper Roth, a junior acting major, is co-director, and artistic director for MTS. “My favorite number from this Cabaret is ‘Sweet Tooth,’ all of the parts came together so well,” she said.
Additionally, Nick Cox is a freshman acting major who performed in Dust and Ashes. “My favorite was ‘Easy Street!’ It was so fun to see it come together,” he said.
People’s reasoning for joining MTS is as varied as their taste.
Some claim it’s a fun interest to continue from high school, while others feel a good sense of community.
“I joined because it seemed like a fun place where the stakes weren’t as high,” Cox said.
Others say they like the way everyone comes together to make a show, and how people from all majors can join.
While MTS might seem like a fun student-run activity on the outside, it has a deeper meaning for many who participate in it. To many, this organization is a second home on campus, a place of happiness, and a way to meet new people.
“This organization means so much to me personally as it is where I have made all of my closest friends. It is a second home for me and I hope that’s how other people feel when they join as well,” Roth said.
Many follow her sentiment with Cox saying he “made many close friends.” He also mentioned that MTS felt like a second home to him and that he was happy to have met so many new people from all different backgrounds.
Herrick takes great pride in her role in MTS and is happy to step away and give others the spotlight.
When asked what the organization meant to her she responded, “This club truly means the world to me. Being stage manager means that I get to let other students at the university have their moment to shine, and I get to make that moment come alive on the stage for them.”
MTS is already preparing for next semester’s shows. Herrick and Roth agreed they feel confident the society will love the selections.
Some people, including Cox, hoped the next show might be “Grease” or “Mamma Mia.” He also stated he would love to see a miscast or gender-bent show.
MTS showcases all different talents and people, and will continue to do so as the year goes on.
