Handshake is an online platform that students have access to through their SRU accounts. It helps students find jobs or internships on and off campus.
The university acquired the app in 2019 as a replacement for the SRU Career Connection system.
The app sends emails to students weekly when it finds items of interest in their academic discipline. These are catered to the user’s area of interest and are often paid positions.
This program could be useful for finding programs and openings in a student’s field of study. It will tell you where the job/internship is found, the pay rate and the status of whether it is in-person/remote/hybrid.
The jobs/internships will be calibrated by academic major(s)/minor(s). The more information a student shares with the app, the better their chances are of finding something to apply for.
Handshake can assist students whose major requires an internship to graduate. It is also used by faculty and staff at SRU to share job openings.
Employers tend to respond to applicants within a reasonable time.
Some SRU students complete their internships at the university. Often these jobs are related to research or PR. They may do graphic design jobs for entities like the Writing Center or Macoskey Center.
A student from the LLCW Department at SRU reported finding a job-shadowing opportunity through the Handshake app. They were able to observe a teacher in an English class.
Many students have reported success while using the app, claiming it is easy to sign up using an SRU email.
Using Handshake could provide SRU with opportunities to grow as a student and as a person in the workforce.
