SRU’s Geology, Geography and Environment (GGE) Club provides social and educational opportunities for GGE majors and those interested in the field.

“I would say the GGE club is mostly a stem off the department itself,” club president and senior Jessica Crandell said. “There’s a lot of trying to recruit new majors and engage current majors.”

The club hosts traditional meetings where students learn about careers in the department, as well as outdoor activities and seminars.

“We like to do fun events where we go camping or have parties and bonfires at the ski lodge,” Crandell said. “There’s a lot of different avenues for this semester… We’re also putting on speaker events and having people actually speak instead of just having alumni come in and talk about what jobs they got with their degree.”

The group typically meets bi-weekly, though student schedules have been busy. Therefore, there will only be one more official meeting this semester: a workshop on obtaining internships in the GGE field.

Meetings are currently held in the Advanced Technology and Science building. However, the location is uncertain. The classroom where meetings originally took place is now a planned engineering lab. The department was forced to relocate much of its equipment.

“Our department has not been looked at much by the administration, and I feel that as a student,” Crandell said. “A lot of the professors are near retirement age and it seems like they’re not looking to hire anyone new… I think we need a revamp of the department. I’m a senior, but I don’t want it to fall apart for the people behind me.”
