The Aebersold Student Recreation Center (ARC) is hosting group virtual fitness classes live on Instagram every week at 5 p.m. The class options are High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and yoga. The classes are hosted by SRU student interns.
The ARC decided to start holding sessions in March of 2020. HIIT classes are held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and a yoga class is held Thursday nights.
Although there are a variety of workout types, Assistant Director of Wellness Ryan Stack spoke on the ARC‘s HIIT class focus.
“HIIT classes have a tendency to be a little bit more accessible for just about everyone. They are also adaptable to from the most novice participant to the most advanced participant,” Stack said.
The virtual HIIT and yoga classes do not require any equipment or prior fitness experience. The virtual fitness classes are held to be accessible to all SRU students, despite location.
Intern and instructor Maddy Mercurio spoke on the importance of exercising.
“It’s always important to exercise, but I think right now with the pandemic, there is a lot of staying at home and procrastination to not exercise,” Mercurio said. “These classes really help people to get motivated to do it and we save the sessions so you can watch them later.”
The classes held by the ARC’s student interns allows for a connection with students and the university. Exercise is a tool for positive thinking and stress relief.
“When you exercise it gives you that sense of accomplishment like ‘I did something good for myself today,’” Stack said.
Students can participate in the virtual sessions through the ARC Instagram, @srucampusrec. Updates or changes to the schedule can also be found on CORE, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
