Slippery Rock women’s soccer defeated second-seed Indiana University (Pa.) 2-1 Tuesday at South Campus Field during their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinals.
SRU will move on to the PSAC Semifinals.
A foul on IUP gave The Rock their first goal opportunity of the game, leading to a team save. Just a minute later, Morgan Sarver got another goal attempt but was off target.
Indiana had their first corner kick at ten minutes in, which led to a shot by Elle Smith but was saved by Leah Allman. Another corner kick came three minutes later along with a shot attempt saved by the goalie.
The White and Green got their first corner kick just shy of 20 minutes in with a shot from Morgan Sarver, but nothing came of it.
The junior forward clocked five shots this game, adding to her total of 40 for the season and tying her with Sophia Palermo.
The Crimson Hawks got the first point on the board with a bottom-right goal scored by Hannah Scardina and assisted by Elle Smith.
Slippery Rock had three more goal attempts to close out the period but the scoreboard was left empty.
The Rock’s offense came back for the second half with four goal attempts within three minutes, but still remained scoreless.
SRU got their first goal of the night seconds after a yellow card on IUP. The goal scored by Nina King was her first of the season.
The score remained tied as the second half ended.
With the start of overtime, IUP came in hot with a shot by Ayla Ward, but came up empty after a save by Allman.
SRU had three back-to-back shots in the last five minutes of the first overtime period but were unable to find the back of the net. The period ended still with a tie.
The second overtime period started with two shots by IUP after the first minute. The Crimson Hawks were able to get another scoring opportunity with a corner kick and a shot by Emily Mannion, but it was off target.
The White and Green snapped the tie with a bottom-right goal scored by Sarver. It was the junior forward’s sixth goal of the season.
Sarver’s five shots led her team, as did her three shots on goal. Faith Diffenbacher, Sydney Patrick, Kierstyn Maxey and Palermo all recorded at least three shots.
Allman had nine saves with just the one goal allowed playing over 108 minutes in the net.
Slippery Rock will go on to play at Shepherd University on Friday at 6 p.m. for the semifinals.
