Slippery Rock men’s soccer team hosted California (PA) on their home pitch, James Egli Field, last Saturday. The White and Green had complete dominance in their 4-1 win over the Vulcans, extending their winning streak to three games.
The Rock were active all over the field as they filled the stats sheets with 16 shots, seven of which were on goal while the Vulcans amounted five shots and with only two of them being on goal. SRU also had seven corner kicks to Cal’s three.
The first goal came in the 24th minute off the foot of senior defender Shaun Spencer for his second goal of the season, which was assisted by senior defender Colton Spence. Ironically, the second goal came in the 41st minute, scored by Spence, and was assisted by none other than Spencer. The goal was Spence’s second of the year.
The third unanswered goal by The Rock was scored by freshman forward Rasmus Fugl, his 4th of the year in the 65th minute of the game assisted by Kaden Reynolds. The Vulcans snapped the shutout though in the 78th minute from a goal by Cooper Robson.
The last goal of the game happened in the 82nd minute by the senior forward Arturo Pla Hernandis. It was his seventh this season and the assist went to senior forward Aaron Finney.
With this win, The Rock is now 5-2-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and 8-4-3 overall which is good enough for second in the standings. Cal U is now 1-6-2 in PSAC play and 4-8-4 overall.
This was an important win for Slippery Rock as they are still in hopes of making it to the PSAC playoffs and joining Gannon University in clinching a PSAC-West playoff spot.
The men have one final game until playoffs start this Friday at 2 P.M. at James Egli Field as they will take on PSAC rival Seton Hill University.
