Slippery Rock’s women soccer took on No. 5 Gannon University at their home field but fell short 2-0 during their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game last Wednesday.
SRU displayed strong offense in the beginning of the first half with three goal-scoring opportunities in short order within the first 10 mins of the game.
After a free kick by Gannon’s June Monasterio resulted in their first goal of the night, the Golden Knights could not find the back of the net again in the first half. Two back-to-back shots were blocked by SRU’s goalie Leah Allman.
The sophomore is ranked seventh in program history for career shoutouts, eighth for goalie wins, and ninth career saves. The goalkeeper has tallied 55 saves this season so far.
Gannon came back in the second half with a high right-side goal scored by Jessie Watkins and assisted by Brooklyn Respecki. The Golden Knights had four more opportunities to score in the last three minutes of the game but two of them were blocked while the other two missed.
SRU had a leg up with nine free kicks awarded, but nothing came of it.
The Rock struggled getting shots through Gannon’s defense with seven shot attempts and two shots on goal. Skylar Munnikhuysen attempted two of the shots. The senior forward player has taken 16 shots in the season.
The win for the Golden Knights keeps them in the first-place spot for the PSAC-West Division at 8-0-3 in conference. SRU sits in third, three points short of Indiana University (Pa.).
The White and Green will continue their conference play on Saturday with California University (Pa.) at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility. A win for The Rock could mean a step up against IUP.
