Slippery Rock women’s tennis traveled to Bloomsburg University to compete in the 2024 ITA Division Ⅱ Women’s Atlantic Regional Championships starting last Friday, Sept. 13 and ending on Monday, Sept. 16.
Amaia Balaguer Brau cruised through the draw to take home the singles title after defeating Sofiia Krasikova of Charleston University 6-4, 7-5 in the final.
The junior transfer from Saint Thomas Aquinas made an impressive run through the tournament without dropping a single set in her six victories.
With her singles title win, the 2024 PSAC West Athlete of the Year secured an automatic bid into the ITA Cup next month. The ITA Cup takes place on October 10-13 in Rome, Georgia.
Alissia Aleksandra Kivi and Nicole Kempton made their way to the doubles final before losing to Ming Deewajee and Daniela Ramos of Indiana University (Pa.) (IUP).
The set length of the doubles draw was only one set until the final match, which was played with the singles format. The singles draw played a best-of-three sets.
Other Slippery Rock standouts in the singles draw were Dari Sakhanova and Alissia Aleksandra Kivi who each picked up three wins on their way to the Quarterfinals before losing.
Sakhanova fell to the eventual champion Balaguer Brau 6-3, 6-1 and Kivi lost to Ramos of IUP by a score of 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 with the last set being a tiebreak.
Nicole Kempton and Georgia Lancaster also picked up wins in the Round of 64 before falling in the Round of 32.
The Rock are in action next on October 5 when they travel back to Bloomsburg University to compete in the Fall Flighted Championship.
