The Slippery Rock women's volleyball team circles up around assistant coach Erin Street during their season opener against Virginia Union University at the Fairmont State Classic on Sept. 6. The Rock took three sets in a row for the victory and had more points, kills, aces, blocks, assists, and digs than their opponent.

The Rock took down Felician volleyball behind three players with at least 13 kills last Saturday at Patty Center in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Callie Chevalier led the match with 18 kills, just ahead of Felician’s Megan Barker. Chevalier has a total of 66 kills in the season so far. The outside hitter has the second most kills on the team this year.

The Rock and Felician fought for the lead in the first set. While SRU got the lead at 22-17, Felician was able to bounce back and tie it at 25 with four combined kills from Elisia Hamilton and Barker. The Rock closed the set with a 2-point lead.

Kate Lachendro-Biery recorded three back-to-back assists that gave SRU a strong start for the second set. The trio of assists raised her season to 28. An attack error by Felician’s opposite hitter, Sally Plagainos, gave The Rock the last point to win the set.

Lachendro-Biery ranks third in SRU history for most digs. With 135 this season, the defensive specialist is ranked fourth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in digs this year. Her 20 digs on Saturday were the most on the court.

Felician took the lead with seven consecutive points in the third set. The Rock had a two-point lead at 24-22, before Felician came back and won the set 26-24.

SRU got out to a big advantage in the fourth set. With five assists from Jaeden Yost and one from Sophia Watterson, The Rock took the lead 15-6. The five assists brought Yost to a total of 160 assists this year.

The White and Green ended up dominating the fourth set 25-11 en route to their 3-1 victory across four sets.

Slippery Rock will return to action against West Liberty University at the Academic Sports and Recreation Complex on Friday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m.
