Women’s soccer drop game against IUP

On Saturday, The Rock fell to IUP for their second conference loss of the season. SlipperyRock (12-3-0, PSAC 11-2-0) was beat by the Crimson Hawks (9-5-0, PSAC 7-5-0), with the final score being 2-1. The loss at IUP continues the streak of games where the home team has won to seven games now.

The scoring was opened in the ninth minute by IUP’s Mahogany Willis, who scored her 13th goal of the season. The goal came off an assist from Gia Martyn. The Rock tied the game up in the 25th minute, when Brooke Riefenstahl headed the ball in off of a corner kick and the assist went to Shannon McIntyre. Willis broke the tie with her second goal of the day in the 47th minute with her 14th goal of the season, and an assist from Alayna Ryan.

Riefenstahl and McIntyre both had four shots on goal, while Riefenstahl had two on target and McIntyre did not register one on goal. Rachel Edge was able to take three shots and had all three on target and Sofia Harrison had two shots and both were on goal. Kayla Swope and Jordyn Minda also had one shot and Swope had one on goal. Willis led the Crimson Hawks with three shots and two on goal.

The Rock led the game with 19 shots and ten on goal, while IUP had only eight shots and five on goal. The Rock had 14 corner kicks, while IUP was only able to take one corner kick and it was in the first half. Slippery Rock had nine corner kicks in the first half and five in the second half. The Rock committed ten fouls and IUP committed nine fouls, and both teams received a yellow card. Madison Johnson received the Rock’s yellow card in the 67th minute and Gabrielle DeSousa received IUP’s in the 88th minute.

The loss to IUP is The Rock’s first full time loss in conference action, as they lost to Edinboro in overtime earlier this season. The Rock still holds the edge in the all-time series 19-17-2. The Rock hasn’t been able to win a game at IUP since 2011, and hasn’t allowed IUP a win in Slippery Rock since 2013. The Rock returns to action on Wednesday against Cal U for their final regular season away game of the season.
