The Slippery Rock University tennis team hosted a non-conference matchup against Notre Dame College on Sunday, beating the Falcons 7-0.
The win is The Rock’s first of the Spring season and first since Oct. 7 when they beat Millersville University 7-0. They currently boast an overall record of 4-2. The Falcons, who do not play a fall season, dropped their first match of the season and now have a record of 0-1.
The duo of junior Lacey Cohen and sophomore Olivia Warner opened up The Rock’s strong afternoon with a 6-0 win over the Falcons’ Laura Herrera and Camryn Kidd in the second doubles flight. In the first doubles flight, the duo of junior Viola Lugmayr and freshman Lois Page bested Notre Dame’s Emily Hofsess and Ameer Robertson.
The duo of senior Allie Welch and sophomore Lauren Fadden won their doubles match by default as there was no opponent to represent Notre Dame in the third flight.
The strong performances in doubles helped lead The Rock to victory in singles.
Cohen continued her strong season with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hofsess. In no. 2 singles, Lugmayr defeated Robertson with matching 6-0 scores while Page beat Herrera with identical scores of 6-3. Warner bested Kidd with two scores of 6-0 to end the day for The Rock. Both Fadden and Welch won their singles matchups by default, as Notre Dame again had no player represent them in that round.
The Rock now enters the Spring Break portion of their season with their next matchup not until March 10. They will be taking on Indiana University East as part of a grouping of matchups in Hilton Head, S.C. from March 10-15.
