On Saturday, the Slippery Rock University women’s cross country team headed to Edinboro University for the Doug Watts Open.
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference had six teams in attendance, including nationally-ranked Edinboro and Shippensburg. Rock runners, along with those of IUP, Mercyhurst, and Seton Hill, also had a chance to acquaint themselves with the course that will host the conference championships later in the season.
Edinboro’s squad walked away with the team title with an impressive 18 points, followed by Shippensburg and Seton Hill. The Slippery Rock ladies placed fifth with 100 points. Finishing the 6,000-meter course in 23:25 and leading the team was senior Sabrina Palmieri. The 2017 All-PSAC honoree finished in ninth place.
Freshman Julianna Stevens, from Fallston High School in Jarrettsville, Maryland, and Lexie Firment, of Avon, Ohio, followed, placing in 20th and 22nd, respectively. Juniors Kacey Raible (24th in 24:24) and Jill Norris (25th in 24:36) rounded out the scoring.
The top-10 finishers for Slippery Rock, filled out by seniors Paige Diehl and Leslie Peterson, juniors Hannah Kenawell and Katie Proffitt, and freshman Shelby Gluth all placed within the top-50 of the 73 runners that participated.
The team gets the upcoming weekend off to prepare for the Lock Haven Invitational on September 22nd.
