Coming off a successful 2-1 victory against Millersville University on Friday, the Slippery Rock University women’s soccer team looked to advance to a record of 2-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Saturday afternoon versus Shippensburg University.
Unfortunately, The Rock lost a nail biter to the Raiders with a final score of 1-0. Although the women were able to come away with fourteen total shots, five of which were on goal, they were unable to get anything past the Raiders’ goalie Leah Roy.
The lone goal of the afternoon from either side came in the 37th minute when Bailey Bzdak of Shippensburg was able to get a five-yard shot past Rock goalie, sophomore Charlotte Elrod. Elrod, who started the game for the Green and White, was eventually replaced in the 53rd minute by sophomore Kylie Downs. Downs was able to save the only shot on goal she faced in the final half of the match.
The majority of The Rock’s fourteen shots of the day came from sophomores Julianna Esposito, (three) Brooke Testa (two) and Skye Kramer (two). Coming into the second half of play, the women tested the Raiders with five more shots but ultimately came up short.
The loss drops the Green and White to 1-3 overall (.333) and 1-1 (.500) in the PSAC. The Raiders improve their record to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC.
The women will continue their away stretch of matches when they travel to play another PSAC rival, the California University Vulcans, on Tuesday.
