The Slippery Rock women’s lacrosse team faced Wheeling Jesuit for an out-of-conference matchup with the Cardinals Tuesday night. SRU won the match 14-10 and improved to 4-2 on the season.
The Rock jumped out to an early 9-1 lead after 23 minutes of play and never trailed in the contest. However, SRU was tested late in the game. The Cardinals had two separate four-goal stretches to cut the deficit to just two goals with under 16 minutes to play, but Slippery Rock responded with three straight goals late in the game to seal the victory.
Senior Erin Wilcox scored four goals as she increased her current goal-scoring streak to six games. Her four points increased her career point tally to 113 points, tying her for ninth all-time at The Rock.
Sophomore Bre Vodde pushed her goal-scoring streak to three games with two goals and one assist and senior Anna-Marie Warrington finished with two assists. Junior Caitlynn Palladino and sophomore Danni Wilson each added two goals. Senior Kaytlin Callaghan capped off the multiple-point scorers with one goal and two assists.
Callgahan’s three points brings her career total to 149, moving her to fifth on the all-time list at Slippery Rock.
Juniors Ally Culhane and Chynna Chan, along with freshman Jordan Chan all found the back of the net once.
Tia Torchia pick up a team-high six draw controls to help SRU post an 18-8 advantage on the draw.
Senior Jordan Wagner made eight saves and recorded two caused turnovers in goal to earn her fourth win on the season.
Wheeling Jesuit was led by Elizabeth Hales with eight points on four goals and four assists and Jessie Tufnell added two goals and two assists. Paige Plesich and Mary Burns each scored two goals and handed out one assist.
Marie Austin took the loss in goal for the Cardinals after allowing 14 goals and recording 12 saves in a complete game effort.
Slippery Rock will return home to host Bloomsburg University Saturday at 1 p.m. for a PSAC matchup at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
