It was a successful finale to the 2016 regular season for the Slippery Rock women’s tennis team. The women took on the University of Charleston in Morgantown, West Virginia, and were able to come out victorious with a 9-0 win.
To begin the day in doubles play, the duo of sophomore Carla Corrochano Moracho and junior Tiffany Kollah, as well as the duo of juniors Stephanie Fortier and Kylee Woodman, were able to claim victory with 8-2 scores. Sophomore Nina Barbano and freshman Amanda Bruscemi continued their strong season in doubles with a narrow 9-7 win against Taylor Todd and Jackie Bakos. The duo finished with an 8-1 record to close out the regular season.
To begin singles, Fortier was able to handle Caropino with ease defeating her 6-0, 6-1. In the sixth flight, freshman Allie Welch won with a 6-1, 6-0 score against Youell. The Rock’s success continued with Kollah putting up a solid 6-3, 6-1 win against Bakos. Bruscemi handed another loss to the Golden Eagles besting Todd 6-4, 6-2. Corrochano continued her impressive season with a close 6-4, 6-3 win against Edwards. Barbano earned herself her 17th win of the year defeating Pena in the closest match of the afternoon with a final score of 4-6, 6-0, 10-8 to conclude the match.
With the win, the women finish the 2016 regular season with a 14-9 overall record and finished at exactly .500 (3-3) in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Next up for The Rock, the women will have to wait until May 3rd when the NCAA releases the entire tournament field. If Slippery Rock qualifies, it will be their 14th appearance in the national tournament.
