Tennis falls 9-0 to ranked opponent

The Slippery Rock tennis team suffered a blowout loss to no. 18 ranked California University (Pa.) 9-0. With the loss, the women are stationed at a 12-8 record and dropped a game below .500 (2-3) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.

To begin the day, juniors Stephanie Fortier and Kylee Woodman fell to Cal U’s Veronika Mikulis and Alyssa Savill with a score of 8-0. Sophomore Nina Barbano and freshmen Amanda Bruscemi suffered their first doubles loss of the season as a pair to Jasi Witherspoon and Holly Bennet 8-3. In the final doubles match of the day, the team of sophomore Carla Corrochano Moracho and junior Tiffany Kollah were bested by Kiefer Shaw and Lena Dimmer with a score of 8-3.

The Rock’s hardships continued into singles play beginning with Kollah dropping a 6-1, 6-0 loss at second singles to Dimmer. Witherspoon was able to overcome Bruscemi 6-2, 6-4 in third singles to add another point for the Vulcans. In the fourth flight, Fortier was downed by Mikulis 6-3, 6-1. In the sixth slot, Woodman was taken down by Savill 6-4, 6-3. At fifth singles, Rock freshman Allie Welch lost Bennett 6-3, 6-3. At no.1 singles Shaw was able to beat Barbano in the closest match of the afternoon with a 6-4, 7-6 score to add another win for California.

The team’s next matchup is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, against the Clarion University Golden Eagles.
