Rock LAX drops third straight game to Gannon

The Slippery Rock women’s lacrosse team lost its third straight game with a 14-11 defeat at Gannon University Tuesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

Slippery Rock led for much of the first half before Gannon scored with 34 seconds left to take an 8-7 lead into halftime. The second half opened up with both teams trading goals until the score was tied at nine with 25:42 to play.

Gannon then put together a 3-0 run to take a 12-9 lead with 10:57 to play. The Rock responded with a pair of goals to make it a one-goal game at 12-11, but Gannon closed the door with two late goals to secure the 14-11 victory.

Slippery Rock now sits at 7-6 overall and 3-5 in PSAC games with the loss, which was their first this season to a team that is not currently ranked in the top 20 in the national rankings. Gannon improved to 6-8 overall and 3-6 in PSAC play with the victory.

Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 35-27 in total shots and 15-12 in draw controls, while Gannon posted a 20-15 edge in ground balls.

Senior Jordan Wagner was in net for The Rock, recording 12 saves in the loss, while Kat Martinelli was in net for Gannon, making sixteen saves to preserve the victory for the Golden Knights.

Senior Erin Wilcox recorded her ninth hat trick on the season and also pushed her current goal-scoring streak to 13 games. Wilcox has scored at least two goals in 12 games this season.

Senior Kaytlin Callaghan added two goals and one assist to bring her career totals to 119 goals and 175 points, which puts her four goals shy for tying the fifth most career goals in school history and five points back of tying for second on the all-time scoring ledger.

Junior Chynna Chan scored two goals, pushing her current goal-scoring streak to eight games, and junior Jasey Sanders also found the back of the net twice. Freshman Jordan Chan and junior Ally Culhane each scored one goal, while senior Anna-Marie Warrington capped the point scorers with one assist. Sophomore Tia Torchia finished with a team high of six draw controls and four ground balls.

Gannon was led by Leilani King with nine points on five goals and four assists. Kierstyn Haight added five goals and Ashley Mozingo scored two goals.

The Rock will return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup with Millersville University at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
