Slippery Rock’s Student Government Association completed their senate and approved funds for ten campus organizations Monday night.
“This hasn’t happened in years, ever since I’ve been here at least,” SGA President Logan Steigerwalt said of the complete senate.
SGA elected senators to represent Buildings D, E, F and Rhoads Hall, as well as four senators to represent the freshman class.
“I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you,” Steigerwalt said. “We’ll make this a rockin’ year.”
However, Brad Kovaleski, SRU’s executive director of student development and an adviser to SGA, took a more reserved stance on the full senate.
“I don’t think you should be celebrating that much,” Kovaleski said. “A full senate should be the expectation.”
SGA also announced the winners of its fall conference grants, which are awarded on the basis of financial need and allow clubs and organizations to attend conferences they otherwise would not be able to travel to.
The seven recipients were the Student Nonprofit Alliance, the Student Affairs Graduate Association, Rock Catholic, the Student Pennsylvania State Education Association, The Harbor, Exercise Science Society and the Pennsylvania Collegiate Music Educators Association, which received combined funds of $2,500.
Additionally, SGA gave grants to Winter Guard, Men’s Club Soccer and Club Golf to use towards travel expenses, competitions and membership dues.
Winter Guard was given $1,810, Men’s Club Soccer was given $1,456 and Club Golf was given $1,020.
Members of the Rock Football team attended Monday’s meeting and requested that funds allotted for away-game travel be given to Cheyney University’s football team, which would allow the last game of the season to be played at SRU.
“Many of us are seniors and this will be our last chance to play at home,” one representative said.
Other concerns cited included medical risks posed by the quality of Cheyney’s football field, which has caused other football teams to enter into similar arrangements with Cheyney, the representative said.
SGA unanimously approved the request, minus two abstentions.
President Steigerwalt announced that SGA’s executive board and commuter senator Sophia Sarver will be traveling to East Stroudsburg University to learn more about student government on other campuses. He also discussed positive feedback SGA has received from Slippery Rock’s off-campus apartments regarding large parties, sidewalks and lighting issues.
The next SGA meeting will be on Oct. 12 at 8:45 p.m. in the Smith Student Center Theater.
