A shooting at former US president Donald Trump’s July 13 campaign rally at the Butler Farm Show is being investigated as an assassination attempt.
Gunshots were fired and one civilian, identified as Butler resident Corey Comperatore, was killed, according to Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro’s Sunday press conference. Several attendees were critically injured.
Trump stated that he was shot in the ear. He was seen with blood on the right side of his face. The former president was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital before transferring to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
The incident occurred within 15 miles of SRU and in the same county. Several SRU students and Slippery Rock mayor Jondavid Longo were in attendance.
A Trump spokesman told the New York Times that the former president was “safe” after he was rushed off stage by the Secret Service.
Longo posted on Facebook to address the situation.
“I’m home now. I’m alright. My family is safe,” he wrote.
He later posted, “[My family was] seated just feet away from President Trump while the rounds were fired from behind us and flying overhead as we were in the direct line of fire.”
The mayor then thanked people for their concern and said he would reply to citizens in the coming days.
President Joe Biden, among other political opponents and allies alike, condemned the act. He was briefed on the occurrence and addressed the country Sunday afternoon.
The Rocket contacted Longo and Butler Memorial Hospital for comment but has not received a reply.
